St George slaying the dragon; on horseback, facing right; Princess Cleodolinda in left background.
Print made by: Daniel Hopfer. After: Raphael
School/style German. 1505-1536
Curator's comments
Acc. to Hollstein possibly inspired by Raphael's Death of Heliodorus in the Stanza d'Eliodoro at the Vatican.

Icon with St George and the youth of Mytilene
Made in: Lod (?) (Asia,Middle East,Levant,Israel,Lod). 13thC(mid)
Acquisition notes
Sold as a 19th century Russian icon at Christies on 31 March 1968, and described as from an English collection.

Spoon; silver-gilt; bowl engraved with Virgin and Child with St Anne; handle modelled to represent St George in armour piercing the dragon; armed with sword and long dagger; back of bowl with engraved fleur-de-lis; inscribed.
Date 1450-1500
Made in: Malmö Europe,Scandinavia,Sweden,Skåne,Malmö)
Acquisition notes
This collection is known as the Waddesdon Bequest under the terms of Baron Ferdinand Rothschild’s will.

St George; the saint stands in full armour in the centre and pierces his sword through the dragon's throat; to the right stands his horse, seen from behind; in the background is a hill, where the princess stands with raised arms next to a lamb; on top of the hill is the city of Selene.
Print made by: Monogrammist PW of Cologne. 1499-1503 (c.)
At lower margin, the artist's monogram "P W" is engraved. On the horse's bridle: "AVE MARIA MATE(R DEI)".
Curator's comments
This print was issued as a black and white facsimile by the British Museum in 'Reproductions of Prints in the British Museum', New [Second] Series Part II (Early German and Flemish Prints), Published by the Trustees in 1889, where it was number XX and described there as 'Master Using the Initials P.W. St. George and the Dragon.'

St George; the knight depicted on horseback, with raised sword, underneath the horse lies the dragon, pierced by a lance; the princess with lamb stands on a hill in the left background.
Print made by: Master MZ. 1500-1503 (c.)
Curator's comments
Loosely based on Dürer's "Small Courier" and "Knight and Lansquenet".

St George with the dragon at his feet standing in front of a pilaster in a landscape
Print made by: Nicoletto da Modena. 1500-1510
Curator's comments
The delicate engraving, the use of stipple on the ground and the soft light suggests that this print was produced in Venice and reflects the work of Vittore Carpaccio (1460/6–1525/6). The dragon, tethered with the princess's girdle, is subdued in contrast with St George who stands confident after his victory. The imaginative architecture provides the perfect background for the decorative armour and headgear worn by St George.

Joris (Georgius) staand met lans en twee engelen, Lucas Cranach (I), 1506

Saint George with the Princess and the Slain Dragon, Hans Burgkmair (der Ältere), 1508
This scene of Saint George and the dragon is the earliest known chiaroscuro woodcut. The design in black is printed with a line block, and the green areas with a tone block in which the light passages have been cut out. This spectacular print was signed by Hans Burgkmair from Augsburg and the block-cutter Jost de Negker from Antwerp. Which of the two artists conceived the idea of using a tone block is unknown.

Saint George and the Princess, Lucas van Leyden, 1506 - 1510
Lesser known episodes from the story of Saint George are also sometimes the subject of a print. Here the princess tells of her sad circumstance: because the dragon has eaten almost all of the sheep, the king daily sends the monster a child and a sheep. They are also depicted on the ceremonial chain, as is the princess, who together with the sheep, hopes for a happy ending.

St George; wearing armour, holding a flag, his foot resting on the body of the dragon, a plumed helmet on the ground at left
Drawn by: Hans Schäufelein. 1508 (circa)
Curator's comments
Linking it with Dürer's engraving ‘Saint George, standing’ (Dodgson, ‘Dürer Engr.’, pp. 62-63, no. 46, repr.), both Ephrussi and later Lippmann considered this to be by Dürer. As Parker noted in the 1928 ‘Guide’, the drawing was first attributed to Schäufelein by Bock, and seen as an early work of his by Buchner. This miniature scale reworking of the engraving is effected with the straightforward simplification of Dürer's vocabulary, done in pen with an amusing naiveity, characteristic of his early drawings: he adopted a pen line full of curls, but unlike Dürer, scarcely attempted to give any marked individuality, above a certain type-casting to his figures. Dürer's engraving is usually dated c. 1508 and judging from the drawing's style it is likely that it was executed very soon after the print was finished, very possibly shortly after he set out for Swabia from Nuremberg, where he had been working largely for Dürer.

This is one from a series of seven woodcuts, of which only five prints have survived worldwide, most of the impressions are unique. Each woodcut is printed from two woodblocks; they are dated 1510 on the first sheet.

After: Giorgione. Print made by: Michel Lasne. Published by: Malbouré.
School/style Italian, French. 1630-1667. Paris
Curator's comments
It is curious that Lasne thought that the composition was by Raphael.Jones 1990
This engraving is by Michel Lasne 'after Raphael'. It is based on a detail from Giorgione's 'Madonna and Saints' in the National Gallery (269).

Plan of the Battle of the Boyne; in upper half, troop formations; lower centre, map showing the river Boyne; lower left, the royal coat of arms, and St George slaying the dragon, with the motto 'Trajicit et ejicit'; lower right, portrait of William III and Mary II.

H. Joris en de draak, Jacobus Harrewijn, after Bernard Picart, 1711

Saint George, the Chief Champion of England
Bearded warrior wearing classical armour, half-length facing front, raising his sword with his right hand and holding shield decorated with lion in his right; view of battlefield with dead soldiers at right, text below.
Print made by: Anonymous. 1750 (circa). London term details
Lettered with title, text in two columns and publication line: "Printed and Sold in Aldermary Church Yard, London".
Curator's comments
Woodcut produced using sixteenth-century woodblock that must have appeared in a different context, probably German.
Malcolm Jones has found another state of the block in the Ashmolean. The figure is identified not as St George, but as William the Conqueror, and the imprint reads "London, Printed for George Minnikin at Finsbury near Moor-fields"

The Anti-Gallican Society was founded in 1745, Austria remaining an ally until fighting alongside the French in the Seven Years War (1756-63).

Saint George for England.
Title (series) Seven Prints of the Tutelar Saints
"Behold your Saint with Glorious English Fare,
Noble Sirloin, Rich Pudding and strong Beer.
For you my Heart's of Oak, for your Regale,
Here 's good old English Stingo Mild & Stale.
This Porter is by Famous Calvert made,
Justly Renowned of all the Brewing Trade.
Such cheer as this will make you Bold & Strong,
Who'd not on such a Noble Saint, Rely on."
Published by: Carington Bowles. 1781
Curator's comments
The first plate of a series seven plates of tutelar saints. The next plates are of Sts David, Andrew and Patrick, and the other three are of Spain, Italy and France.

St George, full-length, turned to the left and looking at viewer, the slain dragon lying at his feet; after the panel executed by Dosso Dossi for the Constabili Polyptych, Sant'Andrea, Ferrara
After: Dosso Dossi. 1800-1850 (?)
