Anonyme.Nostre Dame de Grasse (Our Lady of Grace). 1451-1500
Our Lady of Grace is without a doubt one of the most striking Virgin and Childs from the end of the Middle Ages. She takes her name from an inscription in Gothic characters on the base, either side of a shield which is, alas, illegible. Her local origin seems certain but it is very difficult to date the work. It is only the study of the style which allows us to date the piece to between 1460 and 1480. Her small face with a pensive, melancholy gaze can be found in many examples of local sculpture, particularly in the Tarn and in the Aveyron, like the drapery of heavy, thick cloths which fall heavily at her feet. An exemplary restoration has restored this work to the full delicacy of its original polychromy.
